American Philosophical Society Library & Museum

The American Philosophical Society is the oldest learned society in the United States. Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, it continues its mission of "promoting useful knowledge" through research, fellowships, and public outreach.

Its Library is a major national center for research in the history of the sciences, early American history, and Native American ethnography and linguistics. At the Museum, visitors will discover the rare, the curious and the authentic, learn about American history and innovation, and make connections among history, art and science. Holdings include over 2.5 miles of manuscript pages and approximately one million rare books, prints, photographs, paintings, scientific instruments, Native American language recordings, and other objects.
