Description

This depicts a settlement on the island of Krakatoa roughly a century before the catastrophic 1883 eruption. At the time of painting, Krakatoa was an inhabited island 9 km (5.6 mi) long by 5 km (3.1 mi) wide. From 26–27 August 1883, the volcano erupted in one of the most violent volcanic events in recorded history, equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT. The cataclysmic explosion was heard 4,800 km (3,000 mi) away in Alice Springs, Australia making it the loudest sound in recorded history. The eruption destroyed two-thirds of the island of Krakatoa. Today, 4 smaller, uninhabited islands remain from the ruins of the previous one.
