Description

This is a 19th century copy of an 18th century oil painting. It shows Terrace Walk and the Lower Assembly Rooms. The building on the left, the Parade Coffee House is now a pub. The building with the three round windows, Wiltshire’s Assembly Rooms, was demolished in the early 19th century when York Street was built. In the distance we can see the way through to Orange Grove, a small opening. It illustrates why Terrace Walk was so called - a place for a stroll rather than a road that led anywhere.
