Dealer's label on frame: "Inscribed on old mount in an early hand 'At the point of junction of the Grand Canal with the River Euho stands the pagoda of Lin-tsin/Lord Macartney in his journal says from the town, or rather walled City, such myriads of inhabitants poured out to see us sail along, as quite astonished me, altho I have been so much accustomed to the sight of Chinese Populousness-' and in another hand 'Pagoda at Lin-Tsin-Fou on the banks of the Grand Canal, where it falls into the Eu-ho River. (21 Oct 1793)'.

Lord Macartney's Embassy, the first British diplomatic mission to China, took place in 1793. William Alexander accompanied the embassy, and subsequently published numerous engravings based on his watercolours.
