The Bahriye Nezareti was built by Ahmet I in 1603-17. The current building on this site is the Ottoman Admiralty built in the 1860s. This was also the site of the Tersane or Ottoman Naval Arsenal founded in Fatih. In the 16th and 17th centuries it could accommodate 120 ships. To the far right is the Naval Hospital built in 1785 and still used by the Navy today.
This picture comes from a descendent of Admiral Sir Baldwin Wake Walker who presumably commissioned them directly from the artist. Walker was an English naval officer who, with the permission of the Admiralty, accepted a command in the Turkish navy in the late 1830s where he was known as Walker Bey and later Yavir Pasha. Walker afterwards commanded the Turkish squadron at Acre, for which service he was nominated a K.C.B. in 1841. He became Surveyor of the British Navy from 1848 until 1861.
