Inscribed in pen and brown ink, lower center: "DUNMOW in Essex. Flitch of Bacon--The claming | of the celebrated reward for conubial bliss & happiness | originated at Dunmow in Essex. Any person going | hither to claim the flitch of [were?] required to kneel | upon 2 stones placed at the Convent door. | and take upon themselves an oat swearng that | they had lived together in the greatest harmony for a given period"
