Description

A watercolour showing a female figure fishing. She is shown full-length, facing left in profile and seated on the bank of a lake or river. She is covered by a net, which is suspended from a tree branch above, and is wearing long gloves and a hat. Insect repellant cones are shown smoking to either side of her and a swarm of insects are shown over the water. The woman is holding a fishing pole, with a large fish shown caught on the end of the line.

Hilda Montalba was one of four artistic sisters who were all friends with Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Hilda and her sister, Clara, visited the princess in Canada in 1879.
