Description

Watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour. In the Middle Ages, St. Malo was a fortified island in the mouth of the River Rance and it still retains much of the old city walls although now connected to the mainland. In the fifteenth century it briefly declared independence from the rest of France and was well known as a home for pirates.
