Description

This is a copy of a print of Dunkeld Cathedral, Perthshire. There is no information about either the original or the copy. This is one of two images relating to Dunkeld Cathedral in the Hutton Collection. This view shows the southern aspect of Dunkeld Cathedral, in its setting among hills on the north bank of the River Tay. The cathedral grew up in stages between 1260 and 1501, on the site of an eight-century Celtic monastery. The Reformation of 1560 partially destroyed the Cathedral. Restored, it served as Dunkeld's parish church at the start of the seventeenth century but the Jacobite rising of 1689 badly damaged it again. Much remains in ruin.
