Description

The date of this drawing is October 1800. It is unsigned by the artist, but may be one of Hutton's own drawings. This is one of three views of Fail Monastery in the Hutton Collection. The Monastery is located near the confluence of The Water of Fail and the River Ayr, two miles south-east of Tarbolton. The east view of Fail Monastery shows it in an advanced state of ruin. Trinitarian or Red Friars founded the monastery in 1252 and the Reformation of 1560 partially destroyed it. The Wallace family repaired the buildings after it passed into its ownership, and renamed it, for a time, Fail Castle. It later fell derelict again.
