Description

A note in the bottom left-hand corner of this drawing reads, 'Collegiate Church of Seton, Haddingtonshire 1781'. It was reproduced in volume I of Captain Francis Grose's famous book, 'The Antiquities of Scotland', published in 1791. Built in the late-fifteenth century and dedicated to St Mary and the Holy Cross, Seton Collegiate Church was founded by the Seton family. It was built on the site of a much earlier parish church, which was incorporated into the present building. It dated from the thirteenth century. Throughout the remainder of fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, subsequent members of the family continued to extend the church.
