Description

Watercolour sketch of the "Shaoo" deer, presumably a "Shou" or Tibetan Red Deer (Cervus canadensis wallichi), from Dingcham province, Tibet. "Sketched by Maxwell from a fresh head with the skin on in my possession, which cause I [illegible] Galling in the Choomlei valley. The colour is a light grey, hair long and think, ears long and heavy, and lined with a thick coat of white woolly hair. A. Campbell, Darjeeling, Dec. 4th, 1850".
