Inscribed in grey ink, lower centre, (on mount): "FRENCH PRISONERS | ON PAROLL. | AT BODMIN CORNWALL | 1795."; in grey ink, centre: "My dear Rowlandson | I shall be at home and alone, if you will favour me with a call I shall be happy | [L N?], in graphite, lower centre: "Dear Bess | Am obliged to Dine out shall not be able to call on you before ten O clock".
