Watercolour illustration part of Charles Piazzi Smyth's Tenerife Papers, inscribed 'to form upper half of pl. 3 of Phil. Trans.' A black and white engraved version of the plate forms half of the plate XXXII of the paper by Charles Piazzi Smyth, 'Astronomical experiment on the peak of teneriffe, carried out under the sanction of the lords commissioners of the admiralty', published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 148 (1858), pp. 465-533. The Royal Society funded Piazzi Smyth expedition of 1856 to set up an observatory on a high point in Teneriffe.
