The tower in the background can be identified as Magdalen College as seen from roughly the south-east. Thus, the houses in the foreground could be located roughly near the north-west end of the Cowley Road, close to what is now the Plain, which was an empty space between 1829 and 1899. However, the incline of the land does not necessarily support this hypothesis.
