From the Collection
De Wint was a prolific drawing master and had many pupils. This watercolour derives from his visits to Lowther Castle, near Penrith in Cumbria, where he taught the daughters of the Earl of Lonsdale. Despite the joint down the centre that gives the watercolour the appearance of sketchbook pages, this semi-panoramic view of the Helvellyn range from the east was in fact drawn in the studio away from the motif.
