Description

A watercolour showing Queen Victoria's niece Princess Elise of Hohenlohe-Langenburg dressed as the ballet dancer Marie Taglioni in La Sylphide. She is shown full-length facing left in profile. There is an open book on a table in front of her. She is dressed in costume with peacock feather wings on her back.
Inscribed below: Eliza as La Sylphide as she appeared July 20th 1834.
Inscribed lower left: PV.d. KP.
In her journal, Princess Victoria descibes how Elise was dressed up as a surprise for the future queen's mother (Elise's grandmother), the Duchess of Kent. Princess Elise was the daughter of Queen Victoria's older half-sister Princess Feodore of Leiningen. Feodore, along with her husband and two children, visited Princess Victoria and her mother from 5 June - 26 July 1834.
