Description

Coloured aquatint by Thomas Daniell, 1796.
The Old Fort or Purana Qila was built by the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Sur after he secured the throne at Delhi in 1540. It was raised over the mound which is said to contain the remains of the ancient city of Indraprastha associated with the Sanskrit Hindu epic of the Mahabharata. Its ramparts cover an area of over 2 miles (3km) and it has three main gates on the north, south and west. Archer op. cit.
