On the Grand Canal at Soochow

1795

William Alexander

From the collection

Title

On the Grand Canal at Soochow

Date

1795

Description

Alternative title: "Chinese Barges of the Embassy Preparing to pass under a Bridge". Typescript note on back of frame: "The location of this particular view, which exists in other versions, has generally been identified as being Soochow on the Grand Canal where Lord McCartney's Embassy arrived on 7th November 1793. The implication from Alexander's journal is that the Canal passes only through the suburbs of the city which were extensive. I hope this is enough for your files."
