Description
The six houses visible at the front of Lele village, behind a stone wall at the water's edge. All have large thatched roofs with a curved roof pole. A French sailor is talking to a woman and two Caroline Islands men beside banana palms in the left foreground. Another tree is also in the foreground, with coconut palms in the background
Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This watercolour version was prepared by Chazal and engraved as Plate 53 for L. I. Duperrey's Voyage ... sur la Coquille ... 1822-1825. Histoire du voyage. (Paris, 1826)
