Description

This image, entitled " Their danses vvich they vse att heir hyghe feastes", is a coloured engraving by Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) which was first printed as a book illustration for the 1590 edition of A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. De Bry based this illustration on a watercolour painted by the artist and colonist John White in 1585-1586 entitled “Indians Dancing Around a Circle of Posts”. White sailed to Roanoke Island as the artist-illustrator, accompanying the expedition led by Sir Ralph Lane to attempt to found the first English colony in North America. The expedition encountered considerable difficulties and returned to England in 1586, however not before White had made numerous watercolour drawings of the surrounding landscape and native peoples.
