Print after Édouard Riou

Description

This image is a colour lithograph print made after an original watercolour by Edouard Riou. Riou painted the watercolour as part of a series depicting the French Empress Eugénie's visit to Egypt in November 1869 where she ceremonially opened the Suez Canal at the invitation of Khedive Isma'il Pasha. These prints of Riou’s watercolours were published as book illustrations accompanying an account of the Empress’ visit to Egypt -‘Voyage pittoresque à travers l'Isthme de Suez’ by Marius Fontane, published in Paris, in 1869.
