Description

The title of this work derives from a poem by Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) titled The High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire, 1571 (1863). Ingelow's tragic verse tells how a woman, shown here standing in an acid-green meadow, drowned in a flood which resulted in the destruction of the sea wall. Pinwell does not allude to her fate, though she casts a mournful expression despite the presence of her two young companions picking flowers.
