Description

An unidentified landscape, probably depicting the volcanic plateau of the North Island as viewed looking east. Mounts Ngauruhoe and Tongariro appear to be smoking. The middle ground shows thick forest leading towards the foothills; in the foreground, two Māori men have set up camp on a river bank. A bridge crossing the river can be seen behind them, with another figure, probably also Māori, upon it.

Jeanine Graham's book 'Frederick Weld' (Christchurch: Whitcoulls Ltd., 1983)mentions that in October 1854, Weld and fellow MP James Stuart-Wortley travelled through the volcanic plateau region of the North Island (p.43).
