Signed in ink bottom right "J Burgess" Reverse in pencil: "View of Nottingham Castle & the Castle Gateway // from Park Street (now Friar Lane) // the building on the left is the Drill Hall pulled // down about 1920. Painted before 1876 // when the ruined building was restored" [etc] View looking up the slope leading to the gatehouse. Foreground right - a woman on the pavement holding a child. Middle ground centre - the gatehouse. Middle ground left - a building [the Drill Hall] In the background beyond the gatehouse is the castle.
