Description

A watercolour sketch for Chevalier's large oil painting of the wedding ceremony of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and the Grand Duchess Marie, daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. The sketch depicts the interior of Imperial Chapel of Winter Palace at St. Petersburg, with a group of figures on a dais and a large chandelier above. Signed and dated. Chevalier was given special permission to attend the wedding of Prince Alfred. This watercolour was sent to Queen Victoria who did not attend the Russian wedding in person by Alfred, who explained in an accompanying letter that the slips attached to the side of the watercolour were included to enable her to follow the different parts of the service.
