The artist took part in the Åland War (Crimean War), witnessing the Battle of Suomenlinna and the destroyed fortress at Bomarsund. It is assumed this picture dates from this campaign. It has been suggested that this picture might depict the aftermath of the Battle of Suomenlinna.
