Description

Carlisle has had a thriving cattle market since the medieval period. Drovers from Scotland brought their cattle south and sold them in Carlisle. The Sands was a sandy island between the two channels of the river Eden and was popular for cattle markets because animals had access to drinking water. When the second channel of the River Eden was blocked off the cattle market extended to cover a larger area as shown in this picture.
