Description
An interior scene depicting the Durham family schoolroom in the Parliament Building at Quebec City. Architectural elements of the room include three plain columns with plain curved moldings above a square base and a variation on corinthian capitals. There is the suggestion of moldings around the ceiling, door and three recessed windows. Furnishings include two rectangular tables with turned legs, the larger one having a drawer and covered with a green fabric. The larger table has an open rectangular box with a hinged lid and books and papers on it. There are unidentified objects on the second table. The room also contains two fan-back chairs and a sofa fully upholstered in a striped fabric. The windows have curtains reaching the sill. On the sill of the window at the right edge of the work is a potted plant and an unidentified object. In the English watercolour tradition interior subjects are unusual at this time.
