Description

Three-master under full sail in the English Channel; the White Cliffs of Dover and lighthouse behind. The artist may have been David McFarlane. The Beatrice was built by Samuel Lapham of Medford MA, in 1849, and was owned by William N. Bordman of Boston, whose house flag is shown on the mainmast. She sailed from Cardiff, Wales, on July 10, 1861 for Hong Kong and was never heard from again. (Info from M.V. Brewington, Assistant Director of the Peabody Museum, Salem).
