A watercolour showing a soldier fighting off bandits outside a fortification. The soldier is shown full-length, standing and facing left in profile. He is holding a bayonet and has just shot two men. One is shown lying on the ground at the soldier's feet. He is holding a curved knife and is bleeding heavily from a wound to his side. Three further men are shown to the left, with one shown fleeing, one standing in front of the soldier and the other shown falling to the ground and clutching a bleeding wound to his chest. A wall is shown behind, with a sentry box standing in front of a door to the right.
