Drawing, 'St. Michael's, Coventry' by Dr William Crotch (1775-1847), pencil, watercolour and ink (black) on paper, 10 Aug 1802; 30.6 cm x 39.6 cm; inscription in brown ink on reverse '213 / 213 / WC / St Michael's - Coventry / 303 feet high! / Trinity 200 feet! / once had / pinnacles on / each buttress / Whenever Sir C Wren came to / Whenever Sir Chrs/ Wren came to Coventry he had a chair placed for him on the spot / spot wch I here chose that he might contemplate the spire. A good lesson / for his Son who in his Parentalia abuses Gothic Architecture. / Aug 10 1802 6 to 7 am / Broad Street Oxford / Back of my house my first residence after / I was married - WC Aug 18. 1801 6am / Little Wm. - Oor boot paper -'; inscription in pencil on reverse 'No 2 of the Ibstock Journey / Wm Crotch / St Michael 101 yards / Trinity 200 feet / a mistake I think / There were pinnacles / to all ye buttresses of ye Church - The spire 400 years old - Church ... S C Wren never / came to Coventry but had a chair placed on purpose to look at it / Miss Dugdale's Warwickshire'
