Subject depicts two standing natives; left figure stands with his arms crossed and smoking a pipe; the right figure stands with legs apart, holding a pipe and a pole in the other hand - this figure appears to be standing on a raft, however there is no indication of water.
The figure on the left is similar to one in an etching of studies in the Vattemare collection. Vattemare (1796-1864) visited Quebec province in 1840-1, and later in the 1840's - he was a promoter of cultural exchange with Europe.
