Dent Blanche, Alps, Switzerland
Image depicts two horse-drawn sleighs passing each other on a country road. One sleigh, depicted from the rear and covered with furs, holds a man with a whip and a woman. It is pulled by two horses, one in front of the other. The second sleigh, depicted from the front, holds three women wearing furs and covered with blankets. Their sleigh is also pulled by two horses, harnessed side by side. The road is bordered on both sides with wooden fences.
It is possible that this may have been part of the LeMarchant Collection. It is mentioned in the Kennedy Galleries Quarterly, Dec 1973, #163 [ill.]. Note, Sir John G. LeMarchant was Lt. Gov. of Newfoundland and living there April 1847-1852; Lt. Gov. of Nova Scotia summer 1852-February 1858.
