The rock was on the Second Cataract (or Great Cataract) of the Nile in Nubia and is now submerged under Lake Nasser. Elwes may have used the term Ultima Thule after Karl Kumm who coined it to refer to southern edge of Muslim North Africa based on a term Greek explorers used for borders of the known world.
