Platja de Sa Riera, Sa Riera, Girona, Spain
The subject is an English three masted lugger. It is depicted lying on the beach, with its main mast lowered with drift nets draped over it, drying. Note the heavy rope attached to the keel, just aft of the forefoot. This was connected to the beach capstan which was used to haul the lugger up the beach to above the high tide level.
These types of luggers were predominant all along the South East coast of England – Deal, Rye, Hastings and Brighton being prominent locations.
