Description

Sir Roger de Septvans, from a brass in Chatham Church, Kent, study prepared for, but not used in Stothard's 'The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain', published by Mrs Anna Eliza Bray, 1817-32, one of a large group of studies for this volume; whole-length, male figure, turned to front, with hands held in attitude of prayer, and legs crossed, suspended from his right side a shield bearing heraldic device, and from his l a sword, wearing armour and surcoat, latter also bearing heraldic devices. Pen and black ink and graphite and watercolour, squared for transfer.
