Description

A watercolour showing a view of the deck of a ship, probably onboard the SS Polynesian. A life boat is shown in the foreground to the lower right, with figures shown walking on the deck behind. Further figures are shown seated on a bench to the left.

Russell Stephenson was an old school friend of Princess Louise's husband John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne. Stephenson and his wife were living in Canada around the time Lorne was appointed Governor-General and the two couples often socialised together.
The SS Polynesian was an Allan Line steamship which sailed between Liverpool and Montreal on a regular basis.
