After Francis Towne (1739-1816)

Description

Pen and ink wash; inscribed on reverse, part missing on the left: … Lavano with Isola Bella on the left/…can Islands. Morning light from the left (H. 24 cm, W. 34 cm)
This view is a copy by Towne’s pupil John White Abbott, of a wash drawing made by Towne in Italy in 1781, now in the Tate Gallery (TO8187). On his death in 1816, Towne left many of his drawings to White Abbott’s uncle, and this copy was probably made soon afterwards. The version by White Abbott continues the composition beyond the left edge of Towne’s drawing, suggesting that Towne’s original has a lost section.
