Description

The Prince, seated with his suite, wearing a fez and white robe and smoking a large pipe. The sheikh stands before him. In the foreground a sandy desert with the bones of animals. A high horizon. Signed and dated.
The watercolourist Carl Haag had travelled through the Middle East in the late 1850s. He met Agyle Agha on 28 July 1859 to sketch him and he visited his camp between 29 July and 3 August of the same year. In 1863, the Prince of Wales commissioned Haag to produce this watercolour of the royal party visiting Agyle Agha, a scene not witnessed by the artist.
