Description

16 September 1849 is the correct date according to the official list of ship wrecks. Robert Elwes' book refers to being wrecked on The Caroline – name changed by Robert Elwes intentionally. This is one of a group of watercolours and drawings produced by Robert Elwes recording scenes witnessed on his world tour (1848-1850). These form the basis of printed illustrations for his travelogue 'A Sketcher's Tour Round the World', published 1854.
