Description

This drawing is entitled simply, 'Duff House'. The artist has neither signed nor dated it. It is a drawing of Duff House made from the south-east, and looking north-west towards the grand, south-facing front of the house and the church towers and houses of the town of Banff beyond. This is the only image of Duff House contained in the Hutton Collection. Duff House sits in parkland to the south-east of Banff. William Adam designed it for William Duff of Braco, later Earl of Fife, and began building it in 1735, with stone brought by sea from the Firth of Forth. Duff rejected the house, however, and since the eighteenth century, it has served variously as a home, a hotel, a sanatorium, and a prisoner-of-war camp. The National Galleries of Scotland now owns it.
