Description

This drawing shows the town of North Berwick from a distance, with St Mary's Priory on the left, and the impressive form of Berwick Law as a backdrop. Although no date has been attached, it was likely sketched in the early 1780s. The Hutton Collection includes further drawings of St Mary's and of St Andrew's Church in North Berwick. The oldest building in North Berwick, the twelfth-century Cistercian nunnery or priory devoted to the Virgin Mary was one of three Cistercian houses in the Lothians: the other two were Newbattle Abbey, near Dalkeith, and the priory at Haddington. Interestingly, between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, Berwick Law was the property of the nunnery, during which time a beacon was maintained at the summit.
