Description

The drawing, which is dated 1781, is unsigned by the artist, but may be one of George Henry Hutton's own works. It is the only picture relating to Comrie Castle in the Hutton Collection. 'Cushville' is these days more commonly spelled 'Coshieville' and is a hamlet near Aberfeldy. Comrie Castle is reasonably removed from the Perthshire village of Comrie, lying approximately twenty miles further north on the banks of the River Lyon, in the parish of Dull. The tower house dates from the sixteenth century, and was built by the Menzies family as a replacement for their stronghold of the same name, which was destroyed by fire in 1488, and its successor, the palace of Weem, which was burned in 1502. The castle has been uninhabited since 1748 and is now largely ruinous.
