Description

1 drawing : ink brush and watercolor over graphite underdrawing. | Drawing shows two men on horseback picking their way across lava stone in Iceland. The "way-marks," as Taylor has labeled them, are large rock cairns that identify the route. Taylor visited Iceland in 1862, perhaps en route to Russia.

In his account of his trip to Iceland ('Egypt and Iceland in the year 1874'), Taylor describes crossing various lava fields including one at Hekla (p.236) and a "desolate lava-field with its cairns of stone" en-route to Soljedal (p.275).
