Description

Although this drawing dates from 20th October 1800, the modern skyline of Peebles is still recognisable. It is unsigned by the artist, but may be one of George Henry Hutton's own works. Two notes to the right of the title read 'Cross Church' and 'Par. Ch'. These notes identify, the two spires shown in the picture. The ruined thirteenth-century Cross Church, in an elevated position north of the town centre, is the most obvious landmark. The rebuilt sixteenth-century High Street lies beyond that, south-east of the Eddleston Water, and the roofs of its buildings are discernible, culminating in the spire of the parish church which stands at its west end of the High Street. The hills behind the town are Preston Law, Hundleshope Heights and Stob Law.
