In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this species as a polygamous tree, common in Bengal and originally from China. It flowers in February and March and ripens its fruit in May and June. Roxburgh notes how the fruits have a 'delicious subacid taste.' He also writes: 'The trees in Bengal are as yet small, but I have seen them in China fully as large as a middlingsizedash-tree; they arealso somewhat like it in appearance, with numerous, spreading branches, and a smooth ash-coloured bark. Specimens of this tree have been sent to me from old trees growing on the Garrow mountains.' Roxburgh also observes that this species is very ornamental '...being one of the most permanent ever greens we have in India.' Drawing numbered 2482 in error.
