Description

A middle-aged man, his hair covered with red ochre, the chief of an unidentified tribe, married to Tanleeboneyer. Around his neck is a necklace of kangaroo sinews and he holds a burning stick in his right hand

One of 5 watercolour originals of this subject; three others are held at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, the Royal Anthropological Institute and the State Museum of Tasmania Hobart. The copy at the Pitt Rivers Museum includes the inscription 'Dead - a powerful chieftain and considered a sage - sinews of kangaroo tail spun into cord around his neck'
