Description

William Prynne was born in Swainswick around 1602. He was a Puritan and an outspoken lawyer. He was severely punished for writing pamphlets that criticised the religious policies of Charles I and William Laud, the Archbishop of Canterbury. During the Civil War Prynne supported the Parliamentary army and in 1648 became an MP. However, he was imprisoned for a second time for his criticism of the policies of Oliver Cromwell. After the Restoration of the monarchy Prynne was appointed by Charles II as the royal archivist in the Tower of London. He died in 1669.
