Description

Drawing of Inchaffray Abbey, Perthshire. It is dated June 18th 1781, and although not signed, it is likely that this is one of George Henry Hutton's own works. This is one of three views of Inchaffray Abbey in the Hutton Collection. The ruins of Inchaffray Abbey stand by the Pow Water in the valley of Strathearn, Perthshire. The abbey was founded as an Augustinian priory in 1200, by the Earl of Strathearn, and was inhabited by canons previously based at Scone. In about 1220-1, the priory was raised to the status of an abbey, and in the early fourteenth century its Abbot is reputed to have served as chaplain to King Robert the Bruce. By the fifteenth century the abbey was indecline, and eventually it was used as a quarry for building stone.
